BlueVPN+, connect your Android device to internet with a GPRS modem phone

In the previous post we saw how to pair two Android devices and share the internet connection between them with BlueDUN installed on the master and BlueVPN installed on the slave.   In particular we described how install and configure the BlueVPN:  this app implements a bluetooth dial up client, also called reverse DUN feature.
However, there are situations where you need to connect an Android device, for example a tablet, and you don't own a second Android device (generally a phone), but you have only a GPRS [General Packet Radio Service] phone (like many common BlackBerry, Nokia, Samsung ...phones) with tethered modem capability.
Till now, you has been able to use this phone as an external modem to connect a laptop computer to the Internet but not to connect the Android device.
The last release of BlueVPN for Android ICS (4.0.x) enables the internet connection of Android devices through dial up modem phones and so bypasses this limitation.

To setup the connection you may follow the same steps described before:  enable the bluetooth on both Android and no-Android device and create the BT pairing.    For an unknown Android limitation it is strongly recomended to remove any space in the Bluetooth device names before the pairing ( for example:  rename "Nokia E65" to "NokiaE65" )

The main differences are in the setting parameters:

Modem compatibility:    some modems don't allow multiple lines for AT commands; if you enable this option the AT commands are not prefixed with <cr><lf> ("carriage return" and "line feed")
For example:    compatibility disabled:  <cr><lf>AT<cr><lf>  ;  compatibility enabled:   AT\<cr><lf>

Modem line feed:    if you disable this option the AT commands will use only the "carriage return" character (<cr>) otherwise thery will use both the "carriage return" and "line feed" (<cr><lf>)
For example:    compatibility disabled:    <cr>AT<cr>  ;     compatibility enabled:   AT<cr>

AT Initialization:  it is the modem initialization string, the default is E0V1&C1&D2  but you can change it according to your modem specifications

Connection Timeout:  is the time after which the app will resend the same data if it doesn't receive the replay for the first AT command or first LCP / NCP initialization packet.

Inter-character delay:   some devices are slow in processing characters so we need to wait some milliseconds between each of them (e.g. sending AT is equal to send 'A', wait few milliseconds, send 'T', wait few milliseconds, etc.)

LCP compatibility:  it is an option to force the PPP-LCP negotiation,  you need to enable this option only in extremely rare cases

Blackberry compatibility:  enable this option if you are connecting a Blackberry phone as modem

Bluetooth Insecure Socket:  enable this option only if you get issues with the bluetooth connection

DUN service channel:  represents the channel for the bluetooth DUN profile;  change the value and set a number like 2, 3 , 4 or 6 if the connection doesn't work with the default value 0 (auto-assigned)

Access Point:   while BlueDUN doesn't need any particular configuration because it routes the data packets to/from the Mobile 3G or Wi-Fi existing connections, for your phone to connect over GPRS, you'll need to tell the phone which APN (Access Point Name) to use.
GPRS is a service supplied by mobile phone network operators and the APN is used to work out where to route data requests.  Most operators have different access points for different services, and you'll need to pick the right one, or things won't work; generally the Internet Access point is used for web browsing, email and instant messaging, etc.    Here is the World's GPRS APN list.
For CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) connections keep the Access Point value blank.

Phone Number:   GPRS doesn't use a dial-up number (as GSM data calls do), but a conventional dial up Phone Number (*99# , *99***1# or something similar) should be set for the modem negotiation.
For CDMA usually the number is #777.

Authentication:   the authentication step is generally required even if the username and password are not defined, so you may select the authentication type = PAP (default) or CHAP.   UserName and Password are sometimes required by certain mobile operators and you have to insert the right ones for the user authentication (otherwise leave them blank).

DNS:  finally, you may need to set the Primary and alternative (Secondary) DNS addresses; they are used to resolve the domain names and are generally assigned automatically during the connection setup when equal to 0.0.0.0.  If you force these parameters it is possible that the service provider cannot resolve the internet URLs and the connection doesn't work.

Note:  dialing and connection is supported by the wireless service provider and extra fees or additional charges might apply as this is going through the carrier's network.

BlueVPN has been tested with BlackBerry 9300, Nokia phones (E65, E66, N8-00 Belle, C60-01), Samsung SGH-L760.

Log reports:

You can help the app development in these way:
1. Open the BlueVPN settings and activate the options "Enable Logger" + "Log To File"
2. Go back and tap the GPRS phone name on the paired device list (start new connection)
3. If connection fails or after some time, open the BlueVPN settings again and click the last item [Send Files for Debug] for sending all the generated log files ( named application.log ) by email

Known issues:

A) The BlueVPN app seems locked on Modem or LCP negotiation messages

1. Pair the GPRS phone with a Windows PC and create a bluetooth modem connection
2. Open a command prompt on Window PC (cmd) and type in the order the following commands:
  • netsh
  • ras
  • set tracing PPP enable
3. Connect to internet the PC with your GPRS phone
4. Send by mail the file  /Windows/tracing/PPP.log  and the application.log (generated as described above)

B) The BlueVPN app shows the connected message (and the stop button) but suddently goes back to the paired device list

Some Android device manufacturers (Sony  for example) do not include the
VPN TUN module in the Android 4.0.x version that is installed on the device. This module is similar to a device driver. Without the module installed, a VPN tunnel cannot be established from the device.
To check if your device supports the VPN you can install the CatLog - Logcat Reader! app;
In case of unsupported VPN, an error message that appears similar to the following example is written to the catlog report when you tap the connection button on BlueVPN app:

E/VpnJni  (  189): Cannot allocate TUN: Bad file number
E/F5EdgeClient( 1391): Failed to establish VPN
E/F5EdgeClient( 1391): java.lang.IllegalStateException: Cannot create interface

You can install the TUN module by installing the "TUN.ko Installer" app:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aed.tun.installer

Please contact the manufacturer's support for more information.

Best Practices:  Use only letters and numbers for Bluetooth device names (no special chars or spaces)

C) After the upgrade to Android 4.1 or 4.2 (Jelly Bean), BlueVPN doesn't connect when click on remote device name

Solution:
  - remove the pairing with the remote device on Android settings and create it again.
  - click over the icon on the right of paired device name
  - enable the option "Use for internet access" (don't worry if the it remains unchecked )

    2. Me too. I am trying a BB Bold 9000 (I think, it's my wife's) to her new Nexus 7. I have made the connection with:

      APN: internet.com

This is what is listed for Rogers, and it works with her netbook. I get packets sending, but nothing received.

    6. I have a Blackberry 9800 and I just got connected! Yay!

Here's how I did it. Google "Internet APN" and you will find lists of Internet Settings for various providers.

I have ATT and this worked for me:

      In BlueVPN Settings> Connection Options:
I checked Auto-Resume and Bluetooth Insecure Socket.

      In BluVPN Settings> GPRS Options:
      Phone Number: *99#
      Access Point: wap.cingular
      Authentication: Password Authentication
      Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
      Password: CINGULAR1
      Primary DNS: 0.0.0.0
      Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0

I left the Bluetooth Options unchecked and I checked "Enable Logger" and "Log to File" in Debug Options. I left the Logger Level alone.

      Happy Tethering!

    1. This app manages both the bluetooth interface and the VPN (virtual private network) feature to redirect the network traffic. The VPN is not officially supported by Google until the Android version 4.0.x (ICS) and the bluetooth DUN profile is never supported. The fact that this app works fine with your device strictly depends on the manufacturer's firmware.
I know there are firmwares where the VPN module is missed or incomplete and firmwares where the bluetooh DUN profile is marked as supported but not accessible. This is clearly a bug because in these cases is not possible to register the DUN profile in a custom way at the application level.
I cannot answer to your question, you need to test the app and check if it works for your device firmware.

  6. Brilliant! I bought a Nexus 7 last week, and love it. But I wanted to be able to access the internet while outside of Wifi ranges, and now this lets me do it.
I have an un-rooted Nexus 7, and it is bluetooth tethered using BlueVPN with a Nokia 5230 on t-mobile in the UK. It worked first time.
Can't thank you enough for this!
Just one question; I've been able to use the DUN on the phone from Windows 7 at HSDPA speeds, yet you mention that this uses GPRS. If I get a HSDPA signal on my phone (which I don't do where I am now) will the BlueVPN speed be at HSDPA rates, or can I only access GPRS rates? I know that bluetooth limits the speed anyway, but I was just curious about the terminology.
Many thanks anyway - great to have an app that does exactly what is expected!!

    1. The download speed depends on several conditions: the bluetooth interface, the VPN, the phone features and of course the app performances for data packet management.

  8. BlueVPN should be the solution, but it depends on the tablet features. The BlueVPN for ICS works fine, while, if your tablet has an older Android version it is more complicated. Anyway not all Android ICS firmwares support the VPN connection. You can only download the app and try.

    1. Morotola devices are problematic because the bluetooth profiles are in some cases already registered and it is not possible to create a new registration at application level.
Probably it is a manufacturer choice to avoid the usage of these functionalities.

One question - when connected using BlueVPN, my Nexus 7 (android 4.1) still shows 'no internet connection' despite my having a live connection. Some apps, however, still don't recognize the internet connection. I suspect those apps rely on the 'status message' instead of actually checking for a connection. Any way to fix this?

    5. It's a shame, that Google still wasn't able (or still didn't and doesn't even want...)to fix that issue, although it already exists since Android showed up on the market. If anyone knows of a working workaround, please reply here. I was wondering, maybe, the workaround could be a kind of a network bridge app or something, that bridges BlueVPN's connection to a 'working' adapter (maybe Wifi?), so that applications that are unable to connect yet, can connect again. However, I disagree that this could be a protocol issue, morely it is an issue of a network adapter, that is permitted for usage or not. That's why I came up with that 'network bridge' thing. Maybe an application, which fakes 'connected wifi' system message somehow, could be a workaround as well.

    1. Sometimes this is a problem related to the BT device name: if your nokia phone includes spaces or other no-alphanumeric symbols inside the bluetooth name (showed in the paired device list) you can get this issue. Try to rename the phone.

It may be also an ICS issue:

Previously there were frequent spikes, up to 200mA, even with no data transmission, now the power graph is flat, the average is below 40mA, only the actual data flow raises it to about 200mA, but this is normal. I'm really impressed, this is the ultimate tethering solution, not the power-hungry wifi. Please, do not incidentally spoil all those good features with next releases, hehe

I'm pretty sure that it's phone bug (because its too crappy) or network operator issue, whatever. But unfortunatelly BlueVPN triggers it somehow :(

Once again, on 1st connect AT+CGDCONT works OK, after disconnect/connect it fails for some reason. I'm able to use internet via BlueVPN only on 1st connect after phone (which acts as DUN server) boot.

Im the new guy to this forum..I have been searching for a tethering solution entire web for more than a month..finally this blog looks closed to the problem and hoping for a solution..

Look forward for your appreciated support on below :

bought Google Nexus 7 Tab with BT.3 PAN profile , wanted to connect my Blackberry Curve 8530 ( cdma ,evdo ) over BT..but, failed to do so..tried over blue VPN application on my Tab too..

Its seems, issue to due to my Tab is BT PAN profile and Mobile is BT DUN Profile..also check if any application that is available on Blackberry or Google Play market place which converts BT PAN to DUN profile or vice versa..but, could not get..

also looking for an option of rooting my Tab if its gives me a solution..

    Appreciate your valuable suggestion

    Thx

    1. Install BlueVPN on Nexus 7, it enables the bluetooth DUN profile and in this way you can connect the tablet online through the BB phone.

    2. Install "BT tether briged" from the APP word in your BB 8530. them you need disable the dial up network native on your mobile, and star the app. Install the BlueVPN on Nexus 7, and config the number user name and pasword from you carrier. and then conect with you bb. Note: firts paired both

  29. Hello Mirko,
Do you happen to know if BlueVPN V1.3 is compatible with a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 GT-P6800 running Honeycomb? I am trying to connect to my Nokia E6-00 but it never gets past modem negotiating. I get a "Fail to connect to BT device, please turn off Bluetooth: is not a valid Bluetooth address" message when I stop BlueVPN. I installed CAtlog as recommended but I can't see the message you mention to look out for.

I seldom post a comment to an app developer but I must say thanks to you. After going thru the web for so many times, I was not able to find a solution to let my Samsung Galaxy Tab II 7.0 wifi riding on my BB9000's data plan (not BB plan, just "normal" GPRS data) until I found this site. The BlueVPN works instantly once I paired the devices. Good work and keep it up! (Just one minor issue: don't know why, my Gmail doesn't sync. Any suggestion?)

  38. First of all kudos to Mirko, his efforts help us immensely and it's moral duty to donate to him.
I want to share my experience with Nexus 7 and Nokia E71.
After many frustrating tests, where I got this error:
CET ERROR com.bluexvpn Thread-502 - User alert: Fail to connect to E71 Fabrizio: read failed, socket might closed, read ret: -1
I tried several parameters without success.
The solution was trivial: rename my E71, under E71's Bluetooth parameters, removing the space.
Mirko recommends this, he is right!

Thanks to Mirko and happy tethering to everybody.

  39. I have a Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 GT-P3110 running Android Ice Cream sandwich, wi-fi only model.

I have installed the BlueVPN app on my Tab and paired it with my Nokia X3-02, and they connect perfectly. I do not have an Android phone.

I am on EE/Orange PAYG, so would not expect to see any of the issues you hear of where mobile phone operators do not like tethering due to increased data usage.

I have set the two devices to auto-connect on Bluetooth. I connect to the internet on my phone using the 3G connection with no problem, but when I try to connect to this connection via BlueVPN on my tablet, it first of all shows as connected on the phone, then after less than 5 seconds it disconnects and I get a message saying "Subscribe to general packet data first". I also had this message when I put my girlfriend's SIM in my phone, but she is on a monthly contract with EE/Orange, hence I initially thought the problem may have been the fact that operators don't like tethering with inclusive internet access tariffs, although surely that shouldn't be the case with PAYG.

I was considering buying a GiffGaff Gigabag to connect via 3G on my phone, but am reluctant to do so at the moment owing to this problem. I do not have any option to do any deep setting changes on my phone internet settings. It is set to Orange GPRS as the preferred access point, and I have no problem accessing the internet on my phone.

From all I have read, I should be able to connect this way but am having difficulty doing so. There was no application log error, so I am unable to post it. Any suggestions please?

    2. First of all thank you sincerely for the reply, I'm impressed.

The problem seems to be a complete lack of option for 'use for internet access' in my n7 menu.

I know bluvpn is connecting, because after setting up a new pairing, when connecting bluvpn my phone reacts and asks if I trust my nexus.

When I try to connect it usually says 'modem negotiating' then simply fails and reverts to main screen.

  49. Hi. Great app. Connected first time for me using a BB Bold 9700 and a Galaxy S3. The GS3 is CDMA and I travel internationally including many countries without CDMA data networks. My company-provided BB seems to work anywhere on the planet and has an unlimited international data roaming plan. This app is exactly what I needed, and very simple. Only problem is that so many apps on the GS3 don't recognize the network connection. I mainly need to use Touchdown (for company Exchange email and calendar) and GrooVe IP for free calling through my Google Voice account. Neither of these work. In fact, the only apps that seem to work are browsers and Gmail. Anyway, I know that's an Android bug, which will hopefully get fixed soon. The app works perfectly. I just won't be using it much until all apps recognize the network connection. Thanks!

turn off the tablet and charge it while it is off

after you turned it on, the app should work fine again.

Alternately, stop the application from the Android Settings / Application / BlueVPN / Stop: this should free the BT channel

  61. I found one issue, not very important, but maybe could be easily fixed. When I check the option to automatically reconnect, and phone BT is turned off, or phone is taken away from the tablet and there is no connection, tablet power consumption is quite high. Normally, when connection is established, this particular tablet takes about 400mA, but when it tries to connect to temporarily unavailable phone BT, current raised to 700-800mA. Probably there is a loop, constantly checking for BT device to become available, and that loop causes high CPU load. Otherwise everything is perfect, it's a wonderful piece of software.

  66. Firstly, many thanks for this. I know your software works because somebody on a Skoda forum has managed to get it working
I have just bought a Skoda car and my phone is a Galaxy s3 LTE. When connecting to the car via the rSAP bluetooth protocol the car effectively takes over control of the sim from the phone. So the phone has no 3G signal it all goes through the car. The trouble is I still need to use the internet for various reasons and I can`t do this.
Somebody on The Skoda forum has managed to do this using your excellent software but he hasn`t appeared for a while to explain to me how its done.
I don`t understand whether I need BlueDUN or BlueVPN or both and I don`t understand all the terminology used here such as packets, virtual private network, etc etc.
Can you explain to me how I can achieve what I need in simple laymans terms that an idiot like me can understand

  67. Thanks Mirko, this is a great app! It took me a while to get it working with my Blackberry 9900, but it works now. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 with Android 4.1.1. Here is what I did to get the tab to connect through the bb:
    (1) On the bb, Bluetooth Connections setting screen, press Blackberry key and select Options from the menu. Rename Device Name to remove the space, i.e. change BlackBerry 9900 to BlackBerry9900.
    (2) Under BlueVPN Settings, enable Modem Compatibility.
    (3) Change Phone Number to *99#
    (4) Enter the correct details for my mobile phone network in Access Point, UserName and Password. I'm on T-Mobile and got the details from http://www.geeksquad.co.uk/articles/t-mobile-apn-settings#bb
    (5) Enter the Primary and Secondary DNS servers used by my bb. (Don't know if this is strictly necessary, something I tried before the old classic of switching it off and on again made everything work)
It took me a long time to figure out that I had to change the phone number until I read about it here - http://www.berryreview.com/2009/01/30/faq-setup-guide-for-bluetooth-dial-up-networking-with-your-blackberry/
Although some of the Android apps like Facebook and Skype don't work properly, they only work on WiFi it seems, Gmail, Browser and Firefox work fine!! That's enough for me, I can use the tab for email, twitter, facebook, uploading photos to flickr and browsing when I don't have wifi. (Why don't I use the wifi hotspot on my bb I hear you ask - I am on pay as you go and T-Mobile don't allow me to use that.)
    Excellent piece of work Mirko!
p.s. Like someone else above, I also had the problem with everything appearing to connect ok but no internet access, but it was all OK after I followed the advice of powering off, connecting to charge for a few seconds, then powering on again.

  79. I am trying to make this work with a Sprint (CDMA) Motorola V3M RZR and a tablet running Android 4.2.2. I can get the two units to pair via Bluetooth but cannot progress beyond there.

Here is what I have been using:

    phone number: #777
    Access point: internet.com
    Username:
    Password:
    Primary DNS: 0:0:0:0
    Secondary DNS: 0:0:0:0

I have played with all the options in setting but it simply hangs on "Modem negotiation". I can get internet access from my phone so that is not the issue.

    1. For CDMA connection you don't need an APN; please leave this field empty. In case of more issues, enable the Logger and Log to File options, try one of more connections and send me the log files (last option of setting panel)

  80. According to the website below Sprint CDMA does take an APN. (http://www.webmessenger.com/support/APN.jsp). In any event, I tried it both with and with out the APN and both failed. I sent you the logs a moment ago.

This cell phone has a valid 3g internet connection and a bluetooth DUN software -- pdaNet has been started.

In BlueVPN+, after click the BT device BlackBerry 9800 on the screen, I can see some information as follow:

waiting for connection with BlackBerry 9800....
    Modem negotiating......
Connection negotiation failed, assigned IP is null

I wondered if you could help rectify this situation. thank you so much

    1. Try to change the DUN channel number; set the value 3 for example.

If it still doesn't work, please enable the Logger and the Log to file options, perform some connection attempts and click the last item in the settings for sending me the log files

On the Blaze I am stuck on "LCP Nogotiating" and the tablet is stuck on "modem negotiating".
I've tried using the LCP Compatability on the table. And I've tried setting the DUNs service channel to 0. Neither made any difference. Is there a way to make this work with my hardware?

  102. This may be off-topic:

Can I use BlueVPN to connect an Android smartphone (Nexus 5) to a Verizon bt-capable dumbphone for the main purpose of placing and receiving phone calls and text messages?

I don't care much about internet access, but I would like very much to be able to use the Nexus 5 on my Verizon account. Currently this is not possible and neither Verizon nor Google are saying that it will ever be.

Thus I would like to purchase a dumb Verizon phone, keep it in my pocket, and use the Nexus 5 to place and receive phone calls and text messages.

    Thank you
