However, there are situations where you need to connect an Android device, for example a tablet, and you don't own a second Android device (generally a phone), but you have only a GPRS [General Packet Radio Service] phone (like many common BlackBerry, Nokia, Samsung ...phones) with tethered modem capability.
Till now, you has been able to use this phone as an external modem to connect a laptop computer to the Internet but not to connect the Android device.
The last release of BlueVPN for Android ICS (4.0.x) enables the internet connection of Android devices through dial up modem phones and so bypasses this limitation.
To setup the connection you may follow the same steps described before: enable the bluetooth on both Android and no-Android device and create the BT pairing. For an unknown Android limitation it is strongly recomended to remove any space in the Bluetooth device names before the pairing ( for example: rename "Nokia E65" to "NokiaE65" )
The main differences are in the setting parameters:
Modem compatibility: some modems don't allow multiple lines for AT commands; if you enable this option the AT commands are not prefixed with \r\n (<cr><lf>).
For example: compatibility disabled: \r\nAT\r\n ; compatibility enabled: AT\r\n
AT Initialization: it is the modem initialization string, the default is E0V1&C1&D2 but you can change it according to your modem specifications
LCP compatibility: it is an option to force the PPP-LCP negotiation, you need to enable this option only in extremely rare cases
Bluetooth Insecure Socket: enable this option only if you get issues with the bluetooth connection
Access Point: while BlueDUN doesn't need any particular configuration because it routes the data packets to/from the Mobile 3G or Wi-Fi existing connections, for your phone to connect over GPRS, you'll need to tell the phone which APN (Access Point Name) to use.
GPRS is a service supplied by mobile phone network operators and the APN is used to work out where to route data requests. Most operators have different access points for different services, and you'll need to pick the right one, or things won't work; generally the Internet Access point is used for web browsing, email and instant messaging, etc. Here is the World's GPRS APN list.
For CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) connections keep the Access Point value blank.
Phone Number: GPRS doesn't use a dial-up number (as GSM data calls do), but a conventional dial up Phone Number (*99# , *99***1# or something similar) should be set for the modem negotiation.
For CDMA usually the number is #777.
Authentication: the authentication step is generally required even if the username and password are not defined, so you may select the authentication type = PAP (default) or CHAP. UserName and Password are sometimes required by certain mobile operators and you have to insert the right ones for the user authentication (otherwise leave them blank).
DNS: finally, you may need to set the Primary and alternative (Secondary) DNS addresses; they are used to resolve the domain names and are generally assigned automatically during the connection setup when equal to 0.0.0.0. If you force these parameters it is possible that the service provider cannot resolve the internet URLs and the connection doesn't work.
Note: dialing and connection is supported by the wireless service provider and extra fees or additional charges might apply as this is going through the carrier's network.
BlueVPN has been tested with BlackBerry 9300, Nokia phones (E65, E66, N8-00 Belle, C60-01), Samsung SGH-L760.
Log reports:
You can help the app development in these way:
1. Open the BlueVPN settings and check the options "Enable Logger" + "Log To File"
2. Go back and tap the GPRS phone name on the paired device list (start new connection)
3. Send by mail the file application.log generated inside the folder /sdcard/com.bluevpn of your Android device (you may use a File Manager app like "Astro" to access this file)
Known issues:
A) The BlueVPN app seems locked on Modem or LCP negotiation messages
1. Pair the GPRS phone with a Windows PC and create a bluetooth modem connection
2. Open a command prompt on Window PC (cmd) and type in the order the following commands:
- netsh
- ras
- set tracing PPP enable
4. Send by mail the file /Windows/tracing/PPP.log and the application.log (generated as described above)
B) The BlueVPN app shows the connected message (and the stop button) but suddently goes back to the paired device list
Some Android device manufacturers (Sony for example) do not include the VPN TUN module in the Android 4.0.x version that is installed on the device. This module is similar to a device driver. Without the module installed, a VPN tunnel cannot be established from the device.
To check if your device supports the VPN you can install the CatLog - Logcat Reader! app;
In case of unsupported VPN, an error message that appears similar to the following example is written to the catlog report when you tap the connection button on BlueVPN app:
E/VpnJni ( 189): Cannot allocate TUN: Bad file number
E/F5EdgeClient( 1391): Failed to establish VPN
E/F5EdgeClient( 1391): java.lang.IllegalStateException: Cannot create interface
Please contact the manufacturer's support for more information.
Best Practices: Use only letters and numbers for Bluetooth device names (no special chars or spaces)
C) After the upgrade to Android 4.1 or 4.2 (Jelly Bean), BlueVPN doesn't connect when click on remote device name
Solution:
- remove the pairing with the remote device on Android settings and create it again.
- click over the icon on the right of paired device name
- enable the option "Use for internet access" (don't worry if the it remains unchecked )

hi, i have the blackberry 9800 but when i connect it it does not let me surf the web, it only sends packedges but not recieving it.. does it work with my blackberry torch 9800 with 3g? or do i need an extra application for it to work withbluevpn on my tablet?
ReplyDeleteIt should work; try to set the primary and secondary DNS equals to 0.0.0.0
DeleteMe too. I am trying a BB Bold 9000 (I think, it's my wife's) to her new Nexus 7. I have made the connection with:
DeleteAPN: internet.com
user: wapuser1
pw: wap
This is what is listed for Rogers, and it works with her netbook. I get packets sending, but nothing received.
Try to enable the "Alternative LCP negotiation" option in the setting panel
DeleteMe too, I'm using bold 978 but can't connect.
DeleteHi, I have a nexus 7 and a blackberry curve 9320, I can connect using the APN, user and password and enabling the "Alternative LCP negotiation", I can send packets on my nexus 7 but cannot Receive. Pleaaaaase help me..!!
DeleteI have a Blackberry 9800 and I just got connected! Yay!
DeleteHere's how I did it. Google "Internet APN" and you will find lists of Internet Settings for various providers.
I have ATT and this worked for me:
In BlueVPN Settings> Connection Options:
I checked Auto-Resume and Bluetooth Insecure Socket.
In BluVPN Settings> GPRS Options:
Phone Number: *99#
Access Point: wap.cingular
Authentication: Password Authentication
Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Primary DNS: 0.0.0.0
Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0
I left the Bluetooth Options unchecked and I checked "Enable Logger" and "Log to File" in Debug Options. I left the Logger Level alone.
Happy Tethering!
android app development
ReplyDeleteSensational info. I look forward to seeing more.
If someone provides screenshots or videos, will publish them on this blog. This will be useful for all users. Also videos on youtube are very appreciated.
DeleteI found your app, I am looking for an application that works the other way around. I want to connect to my phones DUN service from my tablet to access internet. Let me know if you work on this!
ReplyDeleteThis app manages both the bluetooth interface and the VPN (virtual private network) feature to redirect the network traffic. The VPN is not officially supported by Google until the Android version 4.0.x (ICS) and the bluetooth DUN profile is never supported. The fact that this app works fine with your device strictly depends on the manufacturer's firmware.
DeleteI know there are firmwares where the VPN module is missed or incomplete and firmwares where the bluetooh DUN profile is marked as supported but not accessible. This is clearly a bug because in these cases is not possible to register the DUN profile in a custom way at the application level.
I cannot answer to your question, you need to test the app and check if it works for your device firmware.
Thanks for sharing this such a great information i really appreciate your work and i shared your blog on facebook, twitter,g+ and digg because this information helps to every one
ReplyDeleteThanks
Regards
Android VPN
Thank you!
DeleteCan You thinked about something similar to BlueVPN?
ReplyDeleteThe same functionality but without VPN, only connect to DUN service on the Phone and use it thier GSM modem for internet access? The smart phone for it is not required.
Unfortunately the only way to redirect the network traffic for an Android device is to open a VPN connection.
DeleteBrilliant! I bought a Nexus 7 last week, and love it. But I wanted to be able to access the internet while outside of Wifi ranges, and now this lets me do it.
ReplyDeleteI have an un-rooted Nexus 7, and it is bluetooth tethered using BlueVPN with a Nokia 5230 on t-mobile in the UK. It worked first time.
Can't thank you enough for this!
Just one question; I've been able to use the DUN on the phone from Windows 7 at HSDPA speeds, yet you mention that this uses GPRS. If I get a HSDPA signal on my phone (which I don't do where I am now) will the BlueVPN speed be at HSDPA rates, or can I only access GPRS rates? I know that bluetooth limits the speed anyway, but I was just curious about the terminology.
Many thanks anyway - great to have an app that does exactly what is expected!!
The download speed depends on several conditions: the bluetooth interface, the VPN, the phone features and of course the app performances for data packet management.
DeleteHello Matt,
Deletehope You are still a reader of this Blog. I want to use the Nokia 5230 but had some difficulties. Th phoe connects only very short to the internet.
Is it possible that You post Your settings? What's the phonenumber You entered - I tried some but without success?
Many thanks in advance!
Gregor
dear blogger i will be happy if you give my answer and try to write a blogspot on your blog.
ReplyDeleteQ: how can I use my nokia E71 as a gprs or edge modem to connect with internet on my android tablet?
My tablet have 3G and wifi option but no gsm or sim support. On the other hand in our area there is no 3G, wifi, or anything except gprs/edge provided by our gsm mobile company.
PLEASE HELP ME TO BROWSE INTERNET ON BY NEW TABLET.
BlueVPN should be the solution, but it depends on the tablet features. The BlueVPN for ICS works fine, while, if your tablet has an older Android version it is more complicated. Anyway not all Android ICS firmwares support the VPN connection. You can only download the app and try.
ReplyDeleteGood night dear friend, I congratulate you for your good contribution and app. I'm sure you can help me, I need to test this app on my tablet but google play will not let me download it, I have a tab Le pan Wi-Fi and I would like to use the program as I have a blackberry 9300.
ReplyDeletePlease send me the app to my mail metje23@gmail.com
Thanks in advanced
i would like to use your app but i am having problems. i want to connect a motorola atrix 2 to a samsung mythic phone so that i can browse the internet on the atrix2 phone. i installed the app and paired the devices. i start the app and choose to connect to the mythic. it goes through the process of connecting which it then does. then suddenly after 10sec it disconnects. am i missing something? what can i do to make this work? any help is much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteMorotola devices are problematic because the bluetooth profiles are in some cases already registered and it is not possible to create a new registration at application level.
DeleteProbably it is a manufacturer choice to avoid the usage of these functionalities.
Many thanks for a great app!
ReplyDeleteI initially had a problem with the "Some Android device manufacturers (Sony for example) do not include the VPN TUN module..." issue mentioned above.
To solve it (for my Ampe A10 running Android 4.0.4) I installed https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aed.tun.installer
Thank you for the suggestion! I think it will be very usefull for all user with similar VPN issues
DeleteMirko - great product! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOne question - when connected using BlueVPN, my Nexus 7 (android 4.1) still shows 'no internet connection' despite my having a live connection. Some apps, however, still don't recognize the internet connection. I suspect those apps rely on the 'status message' instead of actually checking for a connection. Any way to fix this?
Not all applications access to the network using the same protocol; the only way to redirect the network traffic is the VPN and this is a limitation because not all protocols are allowed
DeleteHave the same problem. Surfing via browser works perfectly, but most of the apps (especially google-apps) didn't recognize a data-connection :( Nevertheless: This is nearly the most effective app in Google-store for me :) Looking forward for further updates and improvements!
DeleteIt's an Android bug; file download works only for wifi and mobile:
Deletehttp://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=33666
Got a problem on samsung tab 2 7.0 (android 4.0.3) + nokia 5800.
ReplyDeleteI'm getting "Enter PIN code to connect to 5800 via bluetooth" dialog while trying to connect to the phone from the application devices list, though the devices have already been paired before app launch.
The dialog is shown and closed in a second or two if I do nothing. The BT icon on the phone shows the BT connection is active while the dialog is shown and is changed to inactive when the dialog is closed.
I've manged to enter a random digit as a PIN to the dialog before it was closed and the vpn connection was successfully created giving me the internet access through the phone.
Any thoughts? Thanks.
DeleteSometimes this is a problem related to the BT device name: if your nokia phone includes spaces or other no-alphanumeric symbols inside the bluetooth name (showed in the paired device list) you can get this issue. Try to rename the phone.
It may be also an ICS issue:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11082819/bluetooth-connection-on-android-ics-not-possible
It's very important to add in the settings the name of Access Point that is used by your phone. Without doing it my tab also was asking for the pin code. BlueVPN is great!
DeleteHello. Nice app. I try to get it work with my sony tablet s (android 4.0.3) and my Nokia N8 phone running symbian belle. Can you help?
ReplyDeletePlease enable the Logger and "Log to File" options in the setting panel, try a new connection and send me the file "application.log" generated inside the /sdcard/com.bluevpn folder of your tablet
DeleteGreat app! A little problem question though: is it only works with browsers? I tried speedtest.net app but didn't work. Also whatsapp and other chat app seems doesn't work.
ReplyDeleteAs I wrote above, this is due to the VPN restrictions. I'll investigate in the future if there is a workaround
DeleteThis is due to an Android bug:
Deletehttp://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=33666
Works well, all applications that I usually use can connect to the internet. But there is a big issue: CPU load, constantly 100%. I am using CM10 now, but I tested with CM9, same problem, constant 100% cpu load, and terrible battey drain. Can anyone else confirm that?
ReplyDeleteI think it is due to the firmware; probably the VPN module
DeleteLast update solved this problem, now it's fantastic, thank you!
DeleteI also noticed, that with this new release my Nokia e63 power consumption significantly dropped, down to about 35mA, when there is no data transmission, only the connection is established. Previously there were frequent spikes, up to 200mA, even with no data transmission, now the power graph is flat, the average is below 40mA, only the actual data flow raises it to about 200mA, but this is normal. I'm really impressed, this is the ultimate tethering solution, not the power-hungry wifi. Please, do not incidentally spoil all those good features with next releases, hehe
DeleteThank you for your detailed review!
DeleteI've drastically reduced the packets exchanged to keep the connection alive when the channel is not used.
Moreover, I've noticed in the previous version a lot of GC (java garbage collector) calls even if the free memory was sufficient.
Hey Mirko,
ReplyDeleteI tried to connect my Nexus 7 with my Nokia 5230 but it faild. I send you the logs via mail. Hope, you can help.
Markus
Thank you, I've analyzed your logs and I think the problem is in the connection parameters. I've tested BlueVPN with Nexus 7 and Nokia 5230: the app works for me (with my internet provider)
DeleteAbsolute genius! I just put ICS on my HP TouchPad and this was the first application I installed. I paired my tablet with my phone (Samsung Rogue on Verizon - SCH-U960 - a dumb feature phone). In BlueVPN in settings I set the phone number (#777 for Verizon), UserName (myphonenumber@vzw3g.com), Password (vzw). Then I tried connecting and at first it didn't work until I turned on Modem Compatibility. Then it worked perfectly. I have $10/month unlimited data option for my "feature phone" and now it tethers with my phone! It's only 3g but for $10/month it's perfectly fine. My only question is where do I send a check or do you have a donate page?
ReplyDeleteI'm very glad you can navigate now; a donation for me is your satisfaction; Thank you!
DeleteThis has been working fine - really great - for about 3 weeks. Now BlueVPN hangs when "negotiating with modem". I've tried Uninstall/install and now get "NO CARRIER detected, please check phone line".
ReplyDeleteIt seems that a new log file is started each day, and today's is HUGE, so I'll email tomorrows after just one connect attempt, unless you know of a simple remedy !!!
Enable the Logger (and Log to File) option in the setting panel only if you want to send me the generated application.log file for debug. Otherwise, disable this option to avoid performance degradation.
DeleteHi, this is just what I am looking for but having problems stuck on modem negotiating with Galaxy S i900 2.3.6 and Nexus 7 4.1.1. I'll email the log file. I have tried it with BlueDUN and using Mobile AP tethering, same result. More than happy to do screen shots/videos when I can get this working.
ReplyDeleteI am trying to connect my Android ICS to Nokia 5800. The connection is established and I can see on the phone an active connection. But no data is received by the Android Tablet. The browser is not getting any data. The email is also showing offline.
ReplyDeleteCan you please help ?
Try to activate the remote SIM feature in the bluetooth properties, then pair again with the tablet.
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteHas anyone successfully connected a Nexus 7 to a Blackberry 9790 using BlueVPN? Tried it various ways, and although it is paired and briefly seems to try and connect on the phone, the connection never properly establishes itself.
Thanks in advance.
Hi Dave,
DeleteNexus 7 is fully compatible with BlueVPN; anyway each case is different from the other because there are several variables to consider, in particular the phone modem firmware and the network operator. I know that BB phones work fine, but I need to see the logs to discover the reason of your issue.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI am getting an error :
ERROR com.bluexvpn Thread - 263 - VPN Build error : Cannot create interface
com.bluexvpn Thread - 265- BT Read_Thread data error : Software caused connection abort
I am using Nokia 5800 and Ainol Novo fire running ICS 4.0.4. The Nokia 5800 connects very well for my Apple Mac.
Thanks .....
Sree
The VPN module tun.ko is missed in your device's firmware:
Deletehttps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aed.tun.installer
Why would I have Bluetooth dun on my Android if I didnt install it?
ReplyDeleteIt depends on the firmware: some manufacturer (like Motorola) add this profile to their devices
DeleteHi! BlueVPN works only on first connect with my tablet Ainol Aurora II (tablet is not culprit for sure) and phone Samsung GT-3650. After first connect/disconnect I can't use DUN until phone is rebooted.
ReplyDeleteHere's part of log: http://dpaste.org/qTY7f/ (grep for CME ERROR: 3)
I'm pretty sure that it's somehow related to ATE0V1&C1&D2 command. What is its purpose?
The problem is not the ATE0V1&C1&D2 because it returns "OK", but the AT+CGDCONT.
Deletehttp://www.smssolutions.net/tutorials/gsm/gsmerrorcodes/
I think it depends on your network operator.
Anyway, you wrote a negative comment on Google Play without contacting me, it means you don't want my support
http://www.velcom.by/ru/private/support/9383.htm
DeleteSorry for 1 star review, I was too disappointed :( Edited review to 4 stars with neutral comment. Anyway, I've no problems with DUN with Linux client and with other clients (ppp widget or pppd daemon configured manually) on Android. And those clients does not send ATE0V1&C1&D2 command. I'm pretty sure that it's phone bug (because its too crappy) or network operator issue, whatever. But unfortunatelly BlueVPN triggers it somehow :(
DeleteOnce again, on 1st connect AT+CGDCONT works OK, after disconnect/connect it fails for some reason. I'm able to use internet via BlueVPN only on 1st connect after phone (which acts as DUN server) boot.
How do you close the connection?
DeleteThe best way is to click the big "Power" button on BlueVPN: it disconnect the VPN and close the bluetooth channel with modem device.
Please contact me by email
Hi Mirko,
ReplyDeleteI have a nexus 7 and a blackberry curve 9320, I can connect using the APN, user and password and enabling the "Alternative LCP negotiation", I can send packets on my nexus 7 but cannot Receive. Can you plz help?
Try to download the 1.5 version.
DeleteProbably you don't need the "Alternative LCP negotiation" with BB phones. If you have the same issues with 1.5 version, please enable the Logger (to File) and send me the application.log file generated into the /sdcard/com.bluevpn folder
It's magically working tonight!!.. Thanks so much!! Your a Legend!!
DeleteHi Mirko,
ReplyDeleteIm the new guy to this forum..I have been searching for a tethering solution entire web for more than a month..finally this blog looks closed to the problem and hoping for a solution..
Look forward for your appreciated support on below :
bought Google Nexus 7 Tab with BT.3 PAN profile , wanted to connect my Blackberry Curve 8530 ( cdma ,evdo ) over BT..but, failed to do so..tried over blue VPN application on my Tab too..
Its seems, issue to due to my Tab is BT PAN profile and Mobile is BT DUN Profile..also check if any application that is available on Blackberry or Google Play market place which converts BT PAN to DUN profile or vice versa..but, could not get..
also looking for an option of rooting my Tab if its gives me a solution..
Appreciate your valuable suggestion
Thx

Install BlueVPN on Nexus 7, it enables the bluetooth DUN profile and in this way you can connect the tablet online through the BB phone.
DeleteInstall "BT tether briged" from the APP word in your BB 8530. them you need disable the dial up network native on your mobile, and star the app. Install the BlueVPN on Nexus 7, and config the number user name and pasword from you carrier. and then conect with you bb. Note: firts paired both
Deletehow do u disable the dial up network native on a blackberry?
DeleteI'm working on new BlueVPN version: it will include an homescreen widget to enable/disable the connection with only one click
ReplyDeleteHello Mirko,
ReplyDeleteDo you happen to know if BlueVPN V1.3 is compatible with a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 GT-P6800 running Honeycomb? I am trying to connect to my Nokia E6-00 but it never gets past modem negotiating. I get a "Fail to connect to BT device, please turn off Bluetooth: is not a valid Bluetooth address" message when I stop BlueVPN. I installed CAtlog as recommended but I can't see the message you mention to look out for.
Regards
Jeremy
Hi Mirko, i am using the nexus 7 tablet and a BB 9700. connection it´s working fine for some apps., Play Store, browsing works but other apps don´t (Netflix, Play Movie, Trulia...) because de bug code you reported above sep 25.
ReplyDeletei would like to know when you get a workaround for that issue.
so i want to ask if you think that this particular issue will be corrected in a future 4.1 Jelly Bean update.
Thanks in advance.

ReplyDeleteI use the version 1.5, and already try enable Alternative LCP negotiation and then disable and itsn work.
Can you plz help
Unable to connect nexus 7 to motorola l7e,it is paired and briefly seems to try and connect on the phone, the connection never properly establishes itself.
ReplyDeleteHi Mirko,
ReplyDeleteI seldom post a comment to an app developer but I must say thanks to you. After going thru the web for so many times, I was not able to find a solution to let my Samsung Galaxy Tab II 7.0 wifi riding on my BB9000's data plan (not BB plan, just "normal" GPRS data) until I found this site. The BlueVPN works instantly once I paired the devices. Good work and keep it up! (Just one minor issue: don't know why, my Gmail doesn't sync. Any suggestion?)
Eric

the problem is whenever i try it shows modem negotiation and comes back to bt pairing list
PLEASE HELP ME ....ONLY U CAN HELP...
just once you do it and tell what all to do
plz for god sake help me...
Hallo, thank you, great app but it has a strange behaviour on my tablet (a cheap Ainol Fire). When I try to pair it with my Nokia 5800, after the "Modem negotiating" phase the tablet reboots! Well it does not actually reboot but seems to crash and re-start!
ReplyDeleteProbably it is due to a bug in the device firmware
DeleteHowever sometimes it works... :S
DeleteI found 2 errors in the application.log:
Deletecom.bluexvpn Thread-92 - VPN build error: null
com.bluexvpn Thread-96 - VPN build error: android.os.DeadObjectException
I's a great app. Very useful, too bad for the error...
Ok, sorry for hammering :) but It's just to let other Fire owner, or guys with the same problem, know. I've solved the problem upgrading the firmware from the stock ROM to a Cyanogen adapted for the Ainol Fire. You can find It on the Slatedroid forum. Probably it was a bug in the device firmware as you were saying.
DeleteNow It works perfectly. Thank you again for the app!
IMPORTANT NOTE: if you need support, please send me the "application.log" file generated as described in the post; otherwise I cannot reply to your requests. Thank You
ReplyDeleteFirst of all kudos to Mirko, his efforts help us immensely and it's moral duty to donate to him.
ReplyDeleteI want to share my experience with Nexus 7 and Nokia E71.
After many frustrating tests, where I got this error:
CET ERROR com.bluexvpn Thread-502 - User alert: Fail to connect to E71 Fabrizio: read failed, socket might closed, read ret: -1
I tried several parameters without success.
The solution was trivial: rename my E71, under E71's Bluetooth parameters, removing the space.
Mirko recommends this, he is right!
Thanks to Mirko and happy tethering to everybody.
Thank you for this feedback!
DeleteI have a Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 GT-P3110 running Android Ice Cream sandwich, wi-fi only model.
ReplyDeleteI have installed the BlueVPN app on my Tab and paired it with my Nokia X3-02, and they connect perfectly. I do not have an Android phone.
I am on EE/Orange PAYG, so would not expect to see any of the issues you hear of where mobile phone operators do not like tethering due to increased data usage.
I have set the two devices to auto-connect on Bluetooth. I connect to the internet on my phone using the 3G connection with no problem, but when I try to connect to this connection via BlueVPN on my tablet, it first of all shows as connected on the phone, then after less than 5 seconds it disconnects and I get a message saying "Subscribe to general packet data first". I also had this message when I put my girlfriend's SIM in my phone, but she is on a monthly contract with EE/Orange, hence I initially thought the problem may have been the fact that operators don't like tethering with inclusive internet access tariffs, although surely that shouldn't be the case with PAYG.
I was considering buying a GiffGaff Gigabag to connect via 3G on my phone, but am reluctant to do so at the moment owing to this problem. I do not have any option to do any deep setting changes on my phone internet settings. It is set to Orange GPRS as the preferred access point, and I have no problem accessing the internet on my phone.
From all I have read, I should be able to connect this way but am having difficulty doing so. There was no application log error, so I am unable to post it. Any suggestions please?
How can i pair a htc sensation with a parrot asteroid radio? I have tried it with blue dun, bit it won't work.
ReplyDeletegrtz John Teygeler.
Please help me. I don't do this act. My device is galaxy player 5.0
ReplyDeleteand my phone is too old. :D Samsung e200.I did everything but. When says modem negotiating it closes:( (my device is 4.0.3) :(
Probably this device doen't support the VPN
DeleteWhich is latest version of bluevpn ...can u mail me that soft... I cant download it from playstore..
ReplyDeleteWhat is the device Android version?
DeleteIf you can't download from Google Play, probably your device is not compatible with the app. Anyway send me an email, so I can reply sending you the last APK.
on my nexus 7(updated to 4.2.1),after installed bluevpn,I uesed it to connected to my Nokia E71 through BT for the first time, it's work fine. but later it never works.
ReplyDeleteand also in the option of paired BT device, I cannot find 'use Internet Access' option.
Probably it desn't depend on the bluetooth pairing.
DeletePlease enable the Logger and Log to File options; try a new connection attempt an send me the file "application.log" created under the /sdcard/com.bluevpn of your nexus 7.
i have a nokia n8, there is no option on nexus running 4.2.1 to check 'use for internet'
ReplyDeleteis there any hope for me? Is this fixable? Does android need to be updated to fix?
Nexus 7 running version 4.2.1 should be perfectly compatible with BlueVPN; what happens when you tap the Nokia N8 name in the app main screen?
DeleteNote: remove all spaces in the phone name ("Nokia N8" -> "NokiaN8")
First of all thank you sincerely for the reply, I'm impressed.
DeleteThe problem seems to be a complete lack of option for 'use for internet access' in my n7 menu.
I know bluvpn is connecting, because after setting up a new pairing, when connecting bluvpn my phone reacts and asks if I trust my nexus.
When I try to connect it usually says 'modem negotiating' then simply fails and reverts to main screen.
Again, thanks ... I just bought the n7 and this will make or break it for me
Pardon me, I forgot to mention I did remove spaces in phone name.
DeleteHey, thanks for the reply.
DeleteIt was a lack of access point name that caused my previous issue.
I can connect now no problem. But the connection is extremely buggy, it losses connection constantly. The ONLY app I can seem to use for more than 5 minutes without losing connection is opera mini. Also, possibly with noting ... there is still no option for "use for internet access".
We all appreciate your hard work and tips, thank you!
To reset the app (like mobile phone list), just go to Settings-> applications-> delete app data
ReplyDeleteIs it right?
The listed devices are all those paired in the android settings; to remove phones you need to discard the pairing in the bluetooth options
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI have android 4.1.1, can not connect to the BluVPN. Phone (Samsung C 3322) connects to the tablet, but I do not have the "Profiles" and "interenet Access" as pictured No. 4 I do not know what the problem is. The Windows phone connects without a problem. I would be grateful for your response.
ok, For me work well using BB Torch 9810 (broadcasting) and my asus tf700T. The conection is low, but webpage is opening and all email services app work great. The download and some app no open because say no have network conection.
ReplyDeleteThis app work 100%
Awesome. I have an ASUS Nexus 7 and a BB Torch 9800. Was having trouble for a while. Finally changed the Bluetooth device name to remove spaces and it now works like a charm.
ReplyDeleteHi. Great app. Connected first time for me using a BB Bold 9700 and a Galaxy S3. The GS3 is CDMA and I travel internationally including many countries without CDMA data networks. My company-provided BB seems to work anywhere on the planet and has an unlimited international data roaming plan. This app is exactly what I needed, and very simple. Only problem is that so many apps on the GS3 don't recognize the network connection. I mainly need to use Touchdown (for company Exchange email and calendar) and GrooVe IP for free calling through my Google Voice account. Neither of these work. In fact, the only apps that seem to work are browsers and Gmail. Anyway, I know that's an Android bug, which will hopefully get fixed soon. The app works perfectly. I just won't be using it much until all apps recognize the network connection. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI am trying to make Bluevpn work with last upgraded 4.2.1 JellyBean Nexus 7, connecting via bluetooth to my old Nokia 6120 Classic (wich supports DUN only).
ReplyDeleteWith stock firmware on Nexus 7 bluevpn worked very well, now i get each time
"Fail to connect to Nokia6120rob: read failed, socket might closed, read ret: -1".
I tried to unpair/pair the phone, reset bluetooth on both devices, and one time the connection worked for few seconds. No w is steadily and definitely not working.
I got this working on me (Nexus 7 + Nokia e5-00)
ReplyDeleteI renamed Nexus 7 bluetoothname to "Nexus7" (without space)
Nokia's bluetoothname is just "Nokia"
I added in setup in dns-address those adresses what my computer gives me when i use my Nokia modem as for it. Hope this help someone ; )
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI have a Nexus 7 with Android 4.2.1 and a BlackBerry 9800. Up until a couple of weeks ago it worked perfectly. But now it doesn't.
It connects to the phone and the phone says "modem mode enabled", but I have no internet connectivity.
In the BlueTooth options for my phone on the Nexus 7, there is no "Use for internet access" option.
Any suggestions? I was planning to buy a load of Nexus 7s for work, but if they can't connect to the internet through our Blackberrys, then we'll have to find another solution.
Thanks
Alec
This is due to the Android BT stack; try the following test:
Deleteturn off the tablet and charge it while it is off
after you turned it on, the app should work fine again.
Alternately, stop the application from the Android Settings / Application / BlueVPN / Stop: this should free the BT channel
Thanks for your help Mirko.
DeleteTried that, both the switch off and on method and the alternate method. No change. Both the phone and BlueVPN think that they are connected properly, but I have no internet access from any app.
Do you know why I don't have the "use for internet access" option?
Alec
Please send me the application.log:
Delete- enable the Logger and Log to File options
- perform a new connection attempt
- go to folder /sdcard/com.bluevpn and send me the generated files
I'm having the exact same problem as Alec. Nokia 6021c with Nexus 4 on CM10.1.
ReplyDeleteHello Mirko, this is a great app. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOne question. I have nexus 7 and a Nokia e72 and I use the mail exchange prg of the nexus for work emails but this doesn't seem to work with the app. Is there a way of doing it?
Thanks,
Sabine
There are some apps (like GMail and the Android eMail client )that check for a valid connection before exchange data throught the VPN. Try to use another app for email: for example the Aqua mail ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.kman.AquaMail )
DeleteHello! i have a nexus 7 and a Nokia N95. Sometimes BlueVPN works just fine and connects very fast...but other times i get this error in log file: com.bluevpn Thread 182 (215) VPN build error: Bad address or bt socket closed read return -1 and it doesn't connect to internet.
ReplyDeleteI have been able to connect my Acer Iconia A100 (Android 4.0.x) with BB8520. The browzer works, but none of the other applications :-(

ok I have a nokia N8 and a nexus 7. I have blue vpn installed on the nexus 7 but cant get it on my n8 as all links send me to google play and for some dumb reason my n8 wont allow me to download anything from there... any suggestions as to where I can get it, or will it work with it only running on my nexus as I've tried it this way and it sticks on modem negotiating :(
ReplyDeleteI just wanna say that BlueVPN is the only easy way i could get my new Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0" to tether to my good old Nokia e71. Thanks so much for a great app!
ReplyDeleteI am using the BlueVPN v1.5. May I suggest you to make an version which simply uses GSM dial-up-networking connection (i.e. tel no., login name, password). Not many people need GPRS plan. In my case, I connect my Nokia 6230 with my Xperia Pro. It works but needs GPRS data connection. It would be fine if there is an option of not using GPRS. Thank you a lot!
ReplyDeleteSorry, no kidding, who is using dial-up connections nowadays... It would need almost total rewrite of the whole app, so making such requests is kind of weird.
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteIt is a very useful apps. I would be happy if the BlueVPN can support GSM data (not only GPRS). Thanks!
I found one issue, not very important, but maybe could be easily fixed. When I check the option to automatically reconnect, and phone BT is turned off, or phone is taken away from the tablet and there is no connection, tablet power consumption is quite high. Normally, when connection is established, this particular tablet takes about 400mA, but when it tries to connect to temporarily unavailable phone BT, current raised to 700-800mA. Probably there is a loop, constantly checking for BT device to become available, and that loop causes high CPU load. Otherwise everything is perfect, it's a wonderful piece of software.
ReplyDeletecorporate it solutions The blog was absolutely fantastic! Lot of great information which can be helpful in some or the other way.
ReplyDeleteHi, I have the v.1.5 of Bluevpn on a Nexus 7 (android 4.2.2) and on a TrekStor Ventos 10.1 (android 4.1.1). My phone in a Nokia N8 Belle. With the same settings on both devices, why the Nexus 7 works fine and the TrekStor succeds in atcivating the connection on the phone, but never appear the big button and switch to the list of bluetooth devices, and obviously doesn't navigate? Thanks for any answer.
ReplyDeleteConrad
I have been visiting various blogs for solved question papers for physics. I have found your blog to be quite useful. Keep updating your blog with valuable information... Regards
ReplyDeleteiphone apps
It's worked on me to. I used BlueVPN v1.3 HC-.
ReplyDeleteMaybe when I try at first time (after setting username, etc), it cannot connect and show message "negotiating with modem" for a long time. Then I check on the option Modem Compability and try once more. After that, I can connet to my phone modem but can acces the internet. This problem solve after installed "tun.ko".
I can surf internet from android via bluetooth now.
Many Thanks BlueVPN..
Firstly thanks: bluevpn tethered my nexus 7 to my nokia e72 and I have internet working through it :-) I used waze on my nexus 7 very happily that way for a few days, but today waze started telling me I have not network connection when using bluevpn. Data is 100% coming through into waze because I see other users and traffic updates etc but when I try to search a destination it tells me there is no network connection. The strangest party is that it worked fine including searches until today. I really love waze on my nexus 7 so please help! Thanks, James.
ReplyDeleteFirstly, many thanks for this. I know your software works because somebody on a Skoda forum has managed to get it working
ReplyDeleteI have just bought a Skoda car and my phone is a Galaxy s3 LTE. When connecting to the car via the rSAP bluetooth protocol the car effectively takes over control of the sim from the phone. So the phone has no 3G signal it all goes through the car. The trouble is I still need to use the internet for various reasons and I can`t do this.
Somebody on The Skoda forum has managed to do this using your excellent software but he hasn`t appeared for a while to explain to me how its done.
I don`t understand whether I need BlueDUN or BlueVPN or both and I don`t understand all the terminology used here such as packets, virtual private network, etc etc.
Can you explain to me how I can achieve what I need in simple laymans terms that an idiot like me can understand
Thanks Mirko, this is a great app! It took me a while to get it working with my Blackberry 9900, but it works now. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 with Android 4.1.1. Here is what I did to get the tab to connect through the bb:
ReplyDelete(1) On the bb, Bluetooth Connections setting screen, press Blackberry key and select Options from the menu. Rename Device Name to remove the space, i.e. change BlackBerry 9900 to BlackBerry9900.
(2) Under BlueVPN Settings, enable Modem Compatibility.
(3) Change Phone Number to *99#
(4) Enter the correct details for my mobile phone network in Access Point, UserName and Password. I'm on T-Mobile and got the details from http://www.geeksquad.co.uk/articles/t-mobile-apn-settings#bb
(5) Enter the Primary and Secondary DNS servers used by my bb. (Don't know if this is strictly necessary, something I tried before the old classic of switching it off and on again made everything work)
It took me a long time to figure out that I had to change the phone number until I read about it here - http://www.berryreview.com/2009/01/30/faq-setup-guide-for-bluetooth-dial-up-networking-with-your-blackberry/
Although some of the Android apps like Facebook and Skype don't work properly, they only work on WiFi it seems, Gmail, Browser and Firefox work fine!! That's enough for me, I can use the tab for email, twitter, facebook, uploading photos to flickr and browsing when I don't have wifi. (Why don't I use the wifi hotspot on my bb I hear you ask - I am on pay as you go and T-Mobile don't allow me to use that.)
Excellent piece of work Mirko!
p.s. Like someone else above, I also had the problem with everything appearing to connect ok but no internet access, but it was all OK after I followed the advice of powering off, connecting to charge for a few seconds, then powering on again.
Hello, and Thanks for this nice apli.
ReplyDeleteI got a nexus 7 with 4.2.2, and a BB 9800.
After passing the afternoon trying to make it work, I could discover that for one unknown reason for me, it doesn'twork with the version 2.0 but works fine with the version 1.5. just slow.
I tried the charge tips from you but dont change nothing.
Do you have an idea why ?
And in case that it would be resolved and work in version 2.0, would the speed be increased ?
Thank you
Please install the version 2.0 and enable the Logger to File.
DeleteThe log file is generated inside folder /sdcard/com.bluevpn; please try a new connection a send me the log file application.log
I keep getting the message "NO CARRIER detected, please check the phone line". I have configured Bluevpn on my Samsung Tab 2 7.0 and trying to get it to tether to my Nokia E63. The APN detail is not available on the phone as it identifies it as being “Protected”. I have obtained the APN (three.co.uk) from the internet, but it still does not seem to work. Is there anything I can do?
ReplyDeleteI need the log file, follow the method described above to generate it, thank you
DeleteAfter the upgrade 2.0 of Apr 28, 2013, I cannot connect to Internet. Connection from Nexus 7 to BlackBerry Bold 9780 is OK. Packets are sent from, but cannot received by Nexus 7. Until the recent upgrade, I had used BlueVPN with no major problem for months. I have tested all the option and suggestions given on this blog; but nothing helped.
ReplyDeleteI can send you a screenshot and log files; if you want. Is there a way to install the previous version?
Many thanks.
Yes, of course, but it is better to take a lool to the log file
DeleteI sent you an e-mail with the log file. Thank you very much for the reply.
DeleteHow do I send you the log file? Email? I dont seem to see an email address from this long post. None is available on Playstore.
DeleteAnd yes, while it is better to have a look at the log file from developer’s standpoint, user will love it to be able to install the old version. Cant wait to lose the use of this excellent app, even for just one day.
DeleteMirko is working on a patch of version 2.0. If you write to him, I think he will send you a test copy. I am writing this post using BlueVPN!
DeleteThe new version 2.2 should solve the connection issue for BlackBerry phones (please enable the option "BlackBerry compatibility" in the settings)
DeleteSame issue here, how do i downgrade back to Version 1.5?
ReplyDelete"After the upgrade 2.0 of Apr 28, 2013, I cannot connect to Internet. Connection from Nexus 7 to BlackBerry Bold 9700 is OK. Packets are sent from, but cannot received by Nexus 7. Install new version 2.2 and enable the option "BlackBerry compatibility" in the setting panel
DeleteI am using Nexus7 and Nokia 2050
ReplyDeleteI can't make it work. Nokia 2050 shows that it connected. but BlueVPN stay with "Modem negotiating...".
Try to enable the option "BlackBerry compatibility" in the setting panel for version 2.2
DeleteThank you thank you thank you. Since Android doesn't support Ad-hoc networks and my Symbian doesn't support infrastructure tethering this is exactly the application I have been looking for and it worked just fine!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome
